Install Firefox on Android TV
Install Firefox on Android TV

Mozilla Firefox browser is known as one of the most efficient web browsers due to its speed and user-friendly interface. Also, the Firefox browser occupies little space on a device which makes it a better browser on Android TVs with small memory space.

In addition, it offers several features including Bookmarks, the ability to sync over multiple devices with the same personalized feed, shortcut creation, and Group Tabs. Therefore it’s a browser that you should have on Android TV for easy internet access.

Unfortunately, this browser is unavailable for streaming devices including Android TVs. The Android version is only available for touchscreens. But Good news, back in 2018, Firefox developers release a Firefox browser for Amazon Fire TV and have gone through several updates that make it compatible with Android TVs.

Although this version of Firefox is unavailable on the Google Play store of Android TVs, I’m happy to provide a step-by-step guide to installing Firefox on Android TV.

Let’s proceed!

Does Android TV have Firefox?

There’s no dedicated Firefox app for Android TV and other streaming devices. But you can install the APK format of the Amazon Fire TV on Android TV.

This is possible by sideloading the APK file using Downloader, installation via Aptoide TV, or direct installation of the Firefox APK file from the File manager.

Can I Download Firefox on Android Smart TV?

Yes, you can download and use Firefox on Android TV. Although Firefox developers don’t have a custom app for streaming devices such as Android TV, you can still download and use the Firefox browser on Android TV.

In this guide, I will discuss three methods to install the Firefox browser on Android TV. These methods include:

  1. Installation via the Downloader app
  2. Installation through the Aptoide TV app
  3. Direct installation of the pre-downloaded Firefox browser APK file

How to Install Firefox on Android Smart TV

The Firefox app is unavailable on the Google play store which is the official app store for Android TV. But if your Android Smart TV has a small space and you need a web browser, Firefox is an excellent browser to conserve space and have access to all common browser features.

Proceed with this guide if you want a Firefox on your Android TV.

Note: The Mozilla Firefox is supported on Sony Smart TV, Panasonic smart TV, Nvidia Shield TV, Toshiba smart TV, Sharp smart TV, and Philip smart TV.

Method 1: Installation via the Downloader App to Sideload the Firefox APK File

You can install the Firefox browser by downloading it APK file directly through a Downloader app and proceeding to install it accordingly. A Downloader is an official platform you can use to download and install any third-party app that is unavailable on the Google play store.

To use this method, you need the following:

Follow the steps below to download and install a Firefox APK file on Android TV:

Step 1: Install the Downloader

  • Connect the Android TV to an internet source

Step 2: Permit Installation of apps from Unknown Source

As said earlier, you need the APK download link of the Firefox browser to proceed with this process. The link is required to access the APK file through the Downloader and proceed to installation.

But the link to download the Apk file is long, and it’ll take time to input into the downloader search bar. Therefore you need to shorten the download link using a URL shortener to ease inputting. Follow the steps below to get all done

  • Copy download link for the Firefox APK file from this page
  • Search for URL shortener (e.g., shorturl.at) and paste the APK URL link you copied earlier
  • Copy/write the shortened URL you obtain

Here is the shortened URL to download the Firefox APK file I created for you: shorturl.at/IOTVY

Note: The shortened URL I created may expire. Kindly follow the steps above to create a new shortened URL

Step 4: Download and Install Firefox the Downloader App

Now we will use the Downloader and the shortened URL to download the Firefox browser and proceed to install it. Follow the steps below:

  • Navigate to the Apps screen on the Android TV and launch the Downloader app
  • Type the shortened URL into its search bar and proceed to click GO
  • Download the app and proceed to Install the app immediately, or check the file tab to install the Firefox APK file

Step 5: Install the Sideload Folder App to access the Firefox browser

  • Go to the Google Play Store search bar and type in Sideloader Folder
  • Select the app from the search result and proceed to install
  • After installation, launch the app, and you will find the Firefox browser
